The code encodes one line of text in a format every modern phone recognises: WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourNetwork;P:YourPassword;H:false;;. T is the security type, S is the network name (SSID), P is the password, and H marks a hidden network.
Choose WPA for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 networks — they all use the same value. Use WEP only for genuinely old hardware, and nopass for an open network with no password, in which case you can leave the password out entirely.
If your network name or password contains a backslash, semicolon, comma, colon or double quote, each one has to be escaped with a backslash or the code will be read incorrectly. Our generator handles that for you, which is the usual reason a hand-built WiFi code fails to connect.
iPhones have read WiFi QR codes from the built-in Camera app since iOS 11 — no app required. Point, wait for the notification banner, tap it, and iOS joins the network.
Android has native support from Android 10 onward, both for scanning and for sharing a saved network as a QR code from the WiFi settings. On Android 9 and earlier, the camera usually will not handle it and a scanner app is needed.
A small number of WPA3-only networks are fussy with older client devices. If a guest cannot connect, having WPA2 compatibility enabled on the router resolves it in almost every case.
The working rule is that a code should be at least one tenth of the distance it will be scanned from. A code on a café table read from 30 cm away needs to be about 3 cm across; one on a wall read from 2 metres needs roughly 20 cm.
Keep the quiet zone — the blank margin around the pattern — clear, and print dark on light rather than light on dark. Download as SVG when the code is going to print, so it stays sharp at any size.
A WiFi QR code carries your password in plain text. Anyone who scans it — or simply photographs it from across the room — has your network password. That is fine for a guest network. It is worth thinking about before you print your main network password onto something facing a public street.
The usual answer is a separate guest network on the router, with the QR code pointing at that. Most consumer routers support one, and it keeps visitors off the network your devices are on.

No. The network name and password are encoded directly into the pattern, so nothing is stored on our servers and there is nothing to renew. The code keeps working as long as the password stays the same. Change the WiFi password and you will need to generate a new code.
Yes. Scanning it does not fetch anything — the phone reads the credentials straight out of the pattern and connects. That is exactly why static codes suit WiFi: the code works even when the person scanning it has no connection yet.
Yes. A hidden network needs the hidden flag set in the code, otherwise the phone will not find the network even with the right name and password. Tick the hidden option in the generator and it is included automatically.
The password is stored in plain text in the pattern, so anyone who scans or photographs the code can read it. For a guest network that is normally fine. For your main network, set up a separate guest network on your router and make the code for that instead.
The two common causes are an unescaped special character in the password and the wrong security type. Passwords containing a backslash, semicolon, comma, colon or quote must be escaped, and WPA2 and WPA3 networks both need the WPA setting rather than WEP. Generating the code here handles both.
